This year will be the 20th anniversary of the Jesus, the Black Nazarene of Houston. As we celebrate, we would like to thank the Holy Family Catholic Church for their hospitality in giving a permanent home of the Image of Jesus, The Black Nazarene. Finally housed at the Holy Family Catholic Church and blessed during their 100th year anniversary held last December 2013 by His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo.
All devotees can now visit the Image everyday from 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM and do their own novena prayers. However, there is still a regular First Friday novena prayer being held at the Eucharistic chapel from 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Everybody is welcome to join and pray with us.
Introduction
"What is Jesus, The Black Nazarene?"
The Black Nazarene refers to a life-sized, dark colored statue of Jesus Christ that was brought to the Philippines from Mexico by the first group of Augustinian Recollect friars sent by Spain. This statue was carved by an Aztec carpenter in which Jesus is depicted genuflecting under the weight of the Cross that bore during His Passion.
The Black Nazarene arrived in Manila on May 31, 1606. The statue was initially brought to the first Recollect Church in what is now the Rizal Park. In 1608, it was transferred to a bigger church dedicated to San Nicolas de Tolentino in Intramuros. Then, it was transferred in 1787 by then Archbishop of Manila, Basilio Sancho de Santa Junta y Rufina, to the church in Quiapo - they named, the Black Nazarene of Quiapo. In Quiapo Church, the image survived the great fires that destroyed the Quiapo Church in 1791 and 1929. It also withstood the great earthquakes of 1645 and 1863 and the destructive bombing of Manila in 1945 during the World War II.
"Why Black Nazarene?"
It is said that the image was charred black in a fire that broke out on the ship during its trip to Manila from Mexico. It arrived on May 31, 1606 in this form and has always been depicted as such.
"How did the devotion developed?"
The devotion to the Black Nazarene started when the Image was in Intramuros. In 1608, the Recollect Fathers started promoting the devotion to the Sufferings of our Lord. After fifteen years, the confraternity or Confradia de Jesus Nazareno was established on April 21, 1621. The brotherhood got its papal blessing from His Holiness Pope Innocent X on April 20, 1650. In 1880, Pope Pius VII gave the Image his Apostolic Blessing granting plenary indulgence to those who prayed before the image of the Black Nazarene. This year (2014) marked the 407th year that the Black Nazarene came to the Philippines.
"Jesus, the Black Nazarene Ministry"
This Filipino tradition and spiritual practice was brought in 1994 by a group of Filipino Black Nazarene devotees who migrated to Houston with the duplicate life-sized statue. The Image was housed from each members who hosted them for a year in their residence as Hermano & Hermana Mayor. They hold their devotion prayers every 1st Friday of the month and culminate also with the anniversary of the Statue in the Philippines. While the Feast of the Black Nazarene in Manila is held every 2nd Friday of January, the group decided to hold it every 2nd Saturday of January as well after the 9 days novena prayers prior to the Feast.
After almost 2 decades of practice, the Image finally found a permanent home @ the Holy Family Catholic Church of Missouri City, Texas. The Black Nazarene Prayer Group of Houston finally became a part of the parish ministry and renamed as "Jesus, the Black Nazarene Ministry" with Fr. Joy James as their spiritual director. The ministry would like to thank for the hospitality of Fr. Sunny Joseph (Pastor of the Holy Family Church) for providing the alcove for His home.

The Black Nazarene Ministry is expressing our sincerest thanks to Fr. Sunny Joseph (Pastor of the Holy Family Catholic Church) for granting a permanent home for the Black Nazarene Statue. Thank you also Fr. Joy James for guiding us being the spiritual director of the Black Nazarene Ministry.
Our special thanks to Monsignor Rolando Diokno, Fr. Joy James, Deacons Danny Naranjo & Lynn Connie for celebrating the mass. Our thanks to the altar boys - Bros. Gene Duremdes, Ernie Malixi, Fil Viloria and Ver Viado. Our sincere thanks to all the young boys and girls who constitute our marching band directed by Sis. Dr. Donna Duremdes. We also thank the Notre Dame Choir for providing us the beautiful music under the direction of Ms. Ester Buot. And lastly the Knight of Columbus of the Holy Family Church for joining us in this eventful affair.
We thank all the members as well for their genuine support and hard work the whole year of 2013 culminating to this event. We have been so blessed that we have members who shared their time, talents and devotion to carry through the activities undertaken by the ministry. Thanks to all our monthly family food sponsors during the novena; Tess Alquiza and Vicki Boado for providing the new outfit for the statue of the Black Nazarene; Amy Llacar for baking the cakes to our monthly birthday celebrants and printing flyers, mass program and Nazarene booklets; Bros. Roger Carungcong, Fil Viloria, Sis. Odette Seria, Sabrina Galarion and Delia Granada for helping out in the smooth flow of meetings and finances; To Sis. Gloria Canlas and Meredith and Marina Benson for sharing their talent of music; to Bro. Most importantly, our endless thanks to all our donors, supporters and friends who helped us make this Fiesta celebration a success. The year 2013, Edwin and Cherrie Mirasol share with us the hosting of Jesus, the Black Nazarene statue. For the year 2014, they will still be the Hermano & Hermana Mayor.
